Calcium Boosts Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke for Women, Study Finds |
FaceBook Post by Dr. Palevsky

DR PALEVSKY’S COMMENTS: For years I have been wondering why we continue to recommend calcium as a supplement. Medically, it just doesn't make sense. Bones are made of bone cells. Skin is made of skin cells. Nerves are made of nerve cells. ...Muscles are made of muscle cells. Every cell of the body needs calcium, not just bones. But, each cell also needs an entire array of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, water, and other minerals besides calcium, in order for new cells to be manufactured, and for existing cells to function properly. Calcium is just one mineral. Yes, it's an important mineral, but throwing calcium into the body as a sole nutrient, and expecting us to build strong bones, is like tossing bricks into an open lot and expecting a building to be constructed, just like that. If we want the cells of our bodies to function well, and if we want our bodies to manufacture new cells properly, we need to feed the body real food (anything that grows in the ground, gets picked off a tree, walks on the ground, swims in the water, and flies in the air), not things we call food that can sit on the shelf or in a box for weeks, months, or even years. We also need to give the body water to drink, get plenty of appropriate sunshine, exercise, and sleep. It's not that difficult. Calcium, in a subset of persons, excites the nervous system, thereby increasing heart rate, blood pressure and risk of heart attack and stroke. Eat food. Drink water. Have fun in life. Slow down. Smell the flowers. Create appropriate relationships. And just live.
